Stuart is a die-hard blues and rock n roll fan, and has played the guitar for over 40 years. During
the last decade Stuart has focused on the blues, studying the masters and their approaches to
playing, as well as jazz and theory to become a more accomplished player.
The one aspect of playing the blues that most intrigues Stuart is the opportunity for
improvisation. Jimi Hendrix never played the same solo twice. Being able to make up a guitar
song or solo on the spot is the goal that drives Stuart to play and practice every day.
Stuart formed the Elliott Bay Blues Band, a Seattle blues rock band, in 2018, and although he
lives here in Anacortes he remains a member of the band. They have played at many Seattle area
venues and events, including Folklife, Hidden Door, High Dive, Queen Anne Beer Hall, Stone
Way Café, and Skylark Café. Their most recent gig was a show in March 2023 at Aurora
Borealis in Shoreline, where they were invited by the Washington Blues Society to play at one of
its monthly Blues Bash events.
Stuart teaches a broad array of guitar-centric skills and techniques and offers individual lessons
tailored to each player’s style, interests, and goals. Although learning basic skills and music
theory is important, it’s equally important to have fun! Learning the songs, solos, and playing
styles of your favorite artists not only enhances the personal experience, but also greatly helps to
understand theory and the more technical aspects of playing guitar. Stuart teaches anything
relating to blues and rock guitar. His favorites range from Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, Trower, and
Clapton, to Stevie Ray Vaughn, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Foo Fighters, the
Chili Peppers, and many more.
